Pros

  • Diversity: you can write a program, deploy a new app, or rack a server , depending on your mood.
  • Creativity: I’m able to take holistic environment views and come up with creative solutions to various problems.
  • Helping others: While supporting some users well, sucks! , But I genuinely feel good when I can help make the lives of other people easier. There are a lot of tricks we as sysadmins learn that the general population doesn’t know about.
  • Ability to influence environment: You can pretty much call the shots as to what gets implemented and what doesn’t. (Your boss could technically override your choices though ) But most of the time Its your call ! .

Cons

  • Too much to do : My todo list is huge. If I think about it enough, it can easily overwhelm me. I’ve found that as long as I keep poking at this list as I have time this isn’t too big of a con.
  • Being on call 24/7 : although it isn’t nearly as bad as it used to be but it still sucks, especially when you aren’t compensated for it.
  • Responsibility: Sometimes just knowing that you’re responsible for so much of a company is intimidating. If you screw one thing up it can very easily lead to a monetary loss for the company. This kind of pressure didn’t exist when being a developer because the responsibility was shared with the entire team.
